Winning the Top Restaurant Awards in December 2018, Bombay Canteen has earned their wings with their exclusive take on cocktails and their fun-filled Sunday brunches.
Besides alcohol and food, if there’s one thing that The Bombay Canteen got absolutely right, it’s their love for Mumbai. Creative as they are, the team at this restaurant in Lower Parel, came out with the third edition of Canteen Cocktails – six cocktails named after cult movies, taking inspiration from the city. The rest as they say is history. So, let’s take a look at what the Third Edition of Canteen Cocktails has in store for us:
1. Miss Frontier Mail
Inspired by the Indian action crime thriller – Miss Frontier Mail (1936), this cocktail sure knows how to pack a punch – just like its namesake. This is an exclusive remake of the White Lady Cocktail starring Gordon’s gin, rosemary-infused gin, triple sec, lime juice, simple syrup, egg white and fresh orange juice.
2. Pinjra
While the name comes from a 1972 Marathi film – Pinjra directed by V. Shantaram, we’d say this cocktail is a true-blue delight. The other inspiration behind the drink comes from The Blue Angel – a 1930s German tragicomedy, and is prepared using Gordon’s London Dry Gin, thyme & citrus infused dry vermouth, house lime cordial and blue pea syrup. Talk about taking your mid-week blues away!
3. Sikandar
Sikandar is another name for Alexander – the great ruler from Greece. The Bollywood film Sikandar changed a lot for the residents of Matunga, as it was the first film that premiered at the Aurora theatre back in 1942. Taking you back to the golden era are the ingredients for this cocktail that are sourced from Matunga’s local markets. Made using Captain Morgan The Original Rum, white rum, brandy, pineapple, spice mix, clarified milk, green tea infused tamarind juice, house-made coconut syrup, and lime – this cocktail is an ode to South India.
4. China Town
This 1962 black and white Bollywood thriller directed by Shakti Samanta, screened at Alfred Talkies in Grant Road. Starring Shammi Kapoor in a double role, the movie also featured the iconic number Baar Baar Dekho.
Paying homage to the classic, this cocktail uses Chinese elements like pandan and hibiscus along with Johnnie Walker Red Label to create this tea-like concoction.
5. Whoopee
In 1930, the first release at Byculla’s Palace Talkies was a musical comedy by Thornton Freeland titled Whoopee. Just like the fun and playful movie, the cocktail is a quirky medley that enchants you with flavours of plum in every sip. It draws inspiration from the plum cakes at Regal Bakery, situated right next to the theatre. This exciting cocktail is a mix of Smirnoff vodka, plum & wine syrup, Aperol, lime; and you also have the option to choose Ketel One vodka.
