Activated charcoal doesn’t just make everything you put it in look dark, mysterious and cool, it also has cleansing properties that cleanses your body of all the muck you put into it. So these cocktails aren’t just awesome, they’re a teensy weensy bit good for you!
Everyone loves beachy cocktails, but wouldn’t you want someone to make an ode to black beaches as well? Well Trader Vic’s got our drift and created this special cocktail inspired by the sands of Punalu’u in Hawaii.
What you’ll need:
- 22 ml rock candy syrup (2 parts sugar, 1 part water)
- Dash of activated charcoal
- Squeeze of lime
- 44 ml pineapple juice
- 60 ml coconut rum
- 15 ml Bacardi 151 rum
Instructions:
- Mix activated charcoal thoroughly into syrup, leaving no granules
- Once dissolve, add all ingredients into a shaker
- Mix and strain into a glass
A margarita is supposed to be fun, flirty and sunny, right? Wrong! The activated charcoal margarita gives this usually goody-two-shoes drink a dark makeover that frankly, makes it much more appealing to me. With just the right amount of tequila and citrusy flavours, this is going to be your new fave.
What you’ll need:
- 60 ml tequila
- 15 ml Grand Marnier
- 30 ml lime juice
- Peels of 1 lemon
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- Dash of orange bitters
- ¼ tsp activated charcoal
- Lime wheel as garnish
Instructions:
To make lemon simple syrup –
- In a small saucepan, add peels of lemon, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water
- Bring this mixture to a simmer and then remove from heat
- After mixture has cooled, strain the solids out and store in sealed vessel
To make cocktail –
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add tequila, Grand Marnier, lime juice, lemon simple syrup, orange bitters and activated charcoal
- Shake well and strain into glass
- Garnish with lime wheel and serve
A charcoal cocktail doesn’t always have to be spooky and hard, it can be sweet too! And the adorably-named Dreamsicle is proof. It’s got vanilla vodka, half n’ half and triple sec. Who needs dessert when you have this, right?
What you’ll need:
- 30 ml vanilla vodka
- 30 ml triple sec
- 74 ml orange juice
- 44 ml half n’ half/ half cream
- ½ tsp activated charcoal
Instructions:
- Add all ingredients in a shaker and shake well
- Strain into glass filled with ice
- Serve
Halloween is gone, but why should you leave the spirit behind? This cocktail is dramatic and you need a lighter to make this work and believe us when we say, it’s going to be worth it. Lighting the sage leaf garnish will only bring out this herb’s magical properties, so get to it!
What you’ll need:
- 60 ml pear juice
- 30 ml dry gin
- 15 ml Chartreuse
- 4 tsp lemon juice
- ¼ tsp activated charcoal
- 1 dried sage leaf
Instructions:
- Add pear juice, gin, lemon juice, Chartreuse and activated in a shaker filled with ice
- Shake well and strain into glass
- Carefully light the sage leaf on fire and drop into cocktail
- Serve

- 1 tsp activated charcoal

- Fill your glass with the champagne
- Pour charcoal from the side so that it sinks to the bottom of the glass
